Eugene Francis Howell

Eugene Howell was born Nov. 4, 1962 as the 7th child of Elizabeth Dwyer and Phonse Howell of Northern Bay. During a time when poverty and the struggle to survive meant being tied to the land and the ocean. There was limited TV, no movies, no phones and no internet. We were more tuned in to our neighbors and on the rugged land where we made our play formed a connected part of my being. Growing up in out port Newfoundland by the ocean and the beach formed lasting memories in my mind.

As a child, I liked to roam around on my own and loved the freedom of exploring the rugged landscape. After leaving high school and moving to St. John’s to study, I always loved coming back to the North Shore. I became a teacher and taught in Newfoundland, Ontario and the last 24 years in beautiful British Columbia. I have had many wonderful experiences along the way and my love of photography goes back years. I had been teaching digital media, photography, and technology in British Columbia for many years.

I do spend a lot of quiet time on my own and I go exploring with my camera. I like capturing old stuff from our past and the stories that I think we should preserve. In a age where people are often alone and disconnected from each other, I feel my photography has reconnected many of us in a positive way.

I thank those people in particular who, from the beginning supported me by buying my photos on canvas and encouraging me to do more with my talent.

I think I have a natural ability to see the beauty that is so evident around us. I am humbled by the positive feedback and I truly thank all who support me.

All of my work can be printed on canvas for sale. You tell me the size I tell you the cost. It can be shipped directly to your house.

We are all just on a short bus ride. The next stop you may have to get off. Be slow to anger and quick to forgive.

My belief is that that the closer one is to nature and the animal kingdom the healthier mentally one is.

A man or a woman's life cannot be measured in years. A short life well life is better than a long life lived with sadness and regrets.
